Abstract

911,029. Making ball joints; forging and rolling. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1961 [March 3, 1960], No. 7060/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of making a stud for a ball joint, a shank with a hollow ball end is formed by the chipless working of a hollow cup-like or cylindrical blank. A hollow ball 34 and a groove 36 are formed at the end of an extruded cup-like blank 22 by spinning or pressing the cup portion so that the grain flow 32 is maintained substantially parallel to the ball stud profile. The ball may be closed by welding, brazing or solder. ing and may contain a lubricant or coolant. In the former case a small hole is provided to allow seepage to take place. In a modification an extruded or deep drawn cup-shaped blank is plastically worked to form a hollow ball 48, groove 52 and a reduced shank 46 with a threaded portion 50. In a further modification a tubular blank 56 is formed at one end into a hollow shank 66 with a threaded portion 70. A generating device is used to size the form and impart a surface to the shank and ball. A top and bottom die 76, 74 having cone-shaped cavities 80, 78 are mounted on a press for finishing the ball, and the stud is rotated during each stroke of the press. In a modification back up rolls 90, 92, a powered swingable bearing member 96 having a number of hardened steel balls 104, 106 and a stud-holding rotatable mandrel 88 are used for finishing the ball and groove The balls 104, 106 and the rolls 92, 90 rotate under constant pressure about the driven ball portion 86. The shank 84 is finished by rotating it during each stroke of a press between dies 108, 110 having " V "-shaped working faces 112, 114 mounted on the press.
