Abstract
Stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric uranium dioxide powders, which may contain other oxides, are ball milled to increase the density of the powder to a tap density of at least 3,5 grammes per c.c., and are then tumbled to produce granules. The tumbling may be carried out in an elastomer lined mill. The granules may be sintered to obtain dense granules which may be separated from one another, or the granules may be cold pressed and then sintered to obtain dense shaped bodies. When the uranium dioxide is non-stoichiometric it may have a composition between UO2,2 and UO2,3. The powder may be uranium dioxide enriched in U235, and may be mixed with thorium dioxide; the uranium dioxide also may be mixed with plutonium dioxide.
