[Also in Group XXVIII] An " on," " off " switch of a vacuum cleaner (see Group XXVIII) comprises an operating member 64, Fig. 11, formed with two angularly disposed parts, pivoted about a transverse axis and a short lever 94 also pivoted about the same axis. The bottom portion of the lever 94 is arranged to ride over a bump 95 of a leaf spring 96 so that when the switch is operated the spring retains the switch in its " on " or " off " position. A rod 98 is attached to the lever 94 and actuates the switch, if necessary, on opening the vacuum cleaner casing to ensure that the switch is in the " off " position. The switch, Fig. 12, comprises a stationary contact 62 and moving contact 63. The contact 63 is pivoted in notches of a post 72A, forming part of a terminal 72. A coil spring 63C is attached at one end to the contact 63 and at its other end to a rocker arm 63A such that in the switch " off " position, as shown, the attachment to the rocker arm lies below the plane of the contact 63, but when the switch is moved to the " on " position the rocker arm 63A is moved to bring the attachment of the coil spring above the plane of the contact, whereby the contact 63 rocks about its pivot and contacts the contact 62.
