Abstract

910,258. Locking bolts. IKEDA, S., and NAGASAKA, K. Feb. 10, 1961 [Feb. 22, 1960; Nov. 10, 1960], No. 5130/61. Class 89 (1). A washer 3 bears at least one helical cam surface 7 complementary to at least one similar undersurface on the head of a bolt 1, the helices being of the same hand as the bolt thread but of slightly larger pitch. The bolt 1 and washer 3 are applied as a unit but during tightening the bolt is given a little unscrewing rotation at intervals to force the washer 3 downwards so that annular or radial teeth 9 on the washer undersurface bite into a workpiece 4 to be secured. When the bolt and washer are finally tightened, the pitch difference referred to ensures that mere vibration cannot cause unscrewing rotation of the bolt with respect to the anchored washer. For removal, the bolt and washer are unscrewed together as a unit. The two ends of a 360-degree helical turn are shown as joined by one axial plane surface 14 on the washer. There may be two 180-degree halfturns, Figs. 6-9 (not shown), joining two similar, smaller, plane surfaces at the same level but diametrically opposed.
