Abstract

Gelatin of gel strength below 80 Bloom gms. and viscosity below 20 millipoises is prepared by conditioning a skin stock (e.g. porkskin) with dilute hydrochloric acid at 65-75 DEG F. and then hydrolysing the treated skin with hot water four times.ALSO:A cosmetic preparation for enhancing the moisture-absorbing and moisture-retaining properties of the skin comprises 3 to 15% by weight of collagen protein gelatin having a gel strength below about 80 Bloom gms. and a viscosity below about 20 millipoises and 85-97% by weight of an aqueous mixture, including 0.01-0.5% based on the weight of the finished preparation of a preservative for said gelatin and a plurality of other components, providing a carrier adapted for cosmetic application to the skin. More particularly the preparation has a water-in-oil type emulsion cream base in which the aqueous phase may contain borax and a surface-active agent, e.g. propylene glycol or low molecular weight polymers of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol or mixed polymers thereof such as "Ucon" (Registered Trade Mark). The oil phase contains lanolin, cholesterol, petrolatum, light mineral oil and beeswax. A small amount of hydrogenated vegetable oil may be substituted for the lanolin up to 2% of the finished cream and vegetable oils such as cottonseed oil or sesame oil with preservatives can be substituted for part of the light mineral oil up to 5% of the finished cream. The gelatin used is prepared by acid hydrolysis of animal skins, e.g. pig skin or calf skin and should preferably have an acid pH, e.g. pH 5.0-6.5. A specified preservative for the gelatin is benzoic acid.
