Abstract

<PICT:0909245/III/1> Metal halides, especially of magnesium, vanadium, tantalum, titanium, aluminium, zirconium, niobium, or beryllium, are prepared by cracking one or more gaseous hydrocarbons in contact with metal oxide particles at a temperature above 900 DEG C., and thereafter reacting the resultant carbon coated particles with at least one halogen at a temperature below 1400 DEG C. The cracking is preferably effected at 1100 DEG -1400 DEG C. The hydrocarbon preferably does not contain more than 4 carbon atoms, for example methane, and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas may also be present. The gases resulting from the cracking may be burnt to heat the oxide particles. The oxide particles may be treated in stationary or fluidized beds, or in moving masses. In Fig. 1, metal oxide particles are preheated in combustion chamber 1 by the burning of cracked gases from chamber 2, and the particles then pass to chamber 2, where they are contacted with hydrocarbon gases entering via line 8, thereby coating the particles with carbon, which then pass to halogenation chamber 3 and contacted with halogen entering via line 13. The halide product is either withdrawn via line 7, or if in the vapour from either via line 15 or via heat exchanger 16 and line 18. The oxide particles are preferably below 20 mm. in diameter. The halogenation and cracking may be effected in the same zone.
