[Also in Groups I and XII] A separator device for use in distillation, extraction, absorption, washing, isotope enrichment or other processes in which material is supplied in two phases and in which the two phases are mixed and re-separated, the separated phases containing a substance in relative concentrations which are different from those in the introduced phases, comprises a mixing chamber 2 having a mixing blade wheel 8 and one or more pipes 3, 4, for introducing the two phases in a tangential direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the mixing wheel 8, a conveying blade wheel 5 mounted on the same shaft 7 as the wheel 8 and positioned at the lower end of the chamber 2 within a cylindrical separating chamber 9 so that the heavier phase flows as a film down the inner wall of chamber 9 to be discharged at 10 and the ligher phase-discharges through a central pipe 11. The shaft 7 is driven by an electric motor 6 enclosed within a housing to which is fed at 14 barrier gas which may be a gas introduced into chamber 2. The members 5, 8 may be combined as a single impeller having suitable shaping to serve as a mixer and a conveyer member. A number of the devices may be arranged in series with the two phases flowing co-currently or counter-currently.
