After a cup has been moulded with an appendage, the appendage, according to the invention, is shaped into a handle. The cup, inverted, is mounted on a dolly 12 with the appendage pointing in the direction X. Dies 13 have complementary cutting edges 14 whereby, when the dies are brought together, they cut out the handle shape in the appendage. The dies are carried on the ends of arms 10 which pivot at their other ends about centres 18. The dies are adjusted for alignment, at their mounting point, by studs 52 on fulcrum pins 22. When an hydraulic ram 37 moves a plunger 7 upwards, a pair of links 25, pivoted to a crosshead 28 on the plunger, contract and draw the dies together. When, on the reverse movement, the dies separate, the appendage has been cut into a cup handle but a plug of material remains to be removed from the hole therein, for which purpose rods 48, bent at 50, are used, being mounted in collars 49. Before the operation, the position of the dolly is adjusted by a slide block 57 and screw 58 and the cup appendage is centred by a block 31 on an arm 29 extending from the crosshead. A die heater block 17 is fitted. The ram is operated by the depression of two knobs 33, positioned so that the operator's hands are at a safe distance from the moving parts.
