Abstract
880,666. Shaping glass tubes. ZEISS-STIFTUNG, C., [trading as JENEAR GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN.]. Feb. 4, 1960 [Feb. 7, 1959], No. 4055/60. Class 56. Apparatus for shaping the end of a tube of glass or similar material comprises a holder for one end of the tube, means for rotating the tube, an annular mould to receive the tube, means for heating the end of the tube remote from the holder, a press die with a shaping tool to cooperate with the mould to shape the heated end of the tube and lever means for causing relative reciprocal movement between the tube and the die along the axis of the tube. The glass tube 1 is rigidly held in a holder 2 rotated by a motor 12 and vertically movable by a foot pedal 5 having a cable 13 passing over a roller 14 and secured to the support member 15 on which the holder 2 is mounted. As shown, with the pedal 5 held down, the tube 1 extends through and beyond an annular mould 3 and the rotating end is heated by a burner 4. On release of pedal 5, the heated end of the tube 1 moves down into the annular mould 3 and a rotatably mounted press die 11 with a conical pin 9 is moved downwardly to engage and shape the end of the tube 1 by a lever 6 having a pin and slot connection with the press spindle 7 mounted in a bearing 8. The die mounting 7, 8 is pivotally mounted so that when moved upwardly by the lever 6, the die 11 can be swung out laterally to allow upward removal of the tube 1. The die 11 shown in Fig. 3 is shaped to form a spigot end to the tube 1. An alternative shaped die is shown for forming a socket end to the tube, the two ends being used for connecting two tubes end to end. The mould 3 is maintained at moulding temperature by burners 10.
