Abstract

495,376. Glass manufacture ; fireextinguishing. ATLAS SPRINKLER CO., Ltd., and CHISHOLM, D. H. May 5, 1937, No. 12876. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXI] A frangible bulb, for use as a strut to support the valve in an automatic sprinkler or fireextinguisher, is made of glass or like material and has a cylindrical medial portion of substantially uniform wall thickness and closed end portions. The bulb is made from a tube 1, Fig. 1, by heating the ends of the tube until the glass is soft, and then closing or shaping the softened ends by the pressure of shaping-tools 2, 3 or by means of a mould 5, Fig. 3. The tube may be held by spring fingers 17, Fig. 5, secured to the lower end of a shaft 15 which can be rotated by a driving shaft 30 and moved longitudinally by means of a lever 40. A mould 38 is arranged coaxially, and rotated in unison, with the shaft 15. A rod 51, slidable within the shaft 15, is used for removing the finished bulb from the fingers 17. The end of the tube between the fingers 17 is softened by heating, and the lever 40 is then moved to force the softened glass into the mould 38. In another construction, the fingers may be mounted on the end of a shaft which is provided with a heat-insulating covering to enable the device to be held in the hand. In a further construction, the tube is held in an aperture 53, Fig. 7, in a disc 52 which is rotatably mounted in grooved supporting-pulleys 54 driven by a belt. The end of the tube, when softened by heat, is shaped by the pressure of suitable rollers 65, 66 mounted on arms 63, 64, respectively, pivoted to the base of the apparatus. The moulds and shaping-tools may be heated if desired.
