908,445. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. A.E.I-JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. June 23, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23654/59. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] The beam tube 3 extending through the shielding 1 of a nuclear reactor has a shielding door 4, e.g. of lead, movable laterally across its outer end, means being provided whereby in the closed position of the door the tube is sealed in a liquid tight manner. A closure plate 9 mounted on the door 4 by means of linkages 12 is moved away from the door towards the tube 3 against the action of a spring 20 when, on lateral movement of the door 4, a roller 14 carried by the plate 9 abuts against a stop 15. The door 4 continues moving until a stop 17 it carries abuts against the end of the plate 9 by which time the plate 9 is forced tight against a seating 16, e.g. a thick rubber gasket, surrounding the end of the tube 3. The interior of the tube 3 can then be filled with water through the supply pipe 18. In addition to rollers 5, 6 mounted underneath the door 4 and running on rails 7, 8, respectively, a roller 19 is provided above the door and serves to withstand end thrust and to prevent tipping of the door.
