Abstract

A cigarette, cigar, or tobacco cartridge is formed partly of tobacco producing an acid smoke and partly of tobacco producing an alkaline smoke; the second part may be replaced by a filter impregnated with volatile alkaline substances to neutralize the smoke from the tobacco portion. A cigarette may have the burning and made of tobacco from the acid group, i.e. Virginia or Oriental or light tobaccos such as Burley and Maryland treated to produce acidic smoke, and the mouthpiece end of tobacco from the alkali group, i.e. Brazil, Java, Sumatra, Havana, Mexico, Burley, Maryland and Kentucky. Such cigarettes may be formed by joining a half length cigarette of one type tobacco to a half length cigarette of the other type. The second portion may be replaced by a filter tip of cotton, plastic or cellulose fibres treated with extracts from tobacco of the alkali group or by the addition of a nitrogenous organic base. A cigar has the burning end formed by alkali type tobacco and the mouthpiece end by an acidic tobacco. Alternatively, the cigar or cigarette may be formed wholly of alkali or acid type tobacco, the mouth-piece end being treated with volatile substances which produce acid or alkali substances when the smoke passes therethrough.
