Abstract

781,654. Filter - tip cigarettes. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1954 [July 13, 1954], No. 31488/54. Class 130. A filter tip comprises a segment of granular activated charcoal 5 having a particle size ranging from about 300 microns to about 2,400 microns and an abutting segment of screening or absorbent material 4, e.g. cotton wadding, filaments of cellulose acetate or glass, or crumpled crepe or embossed paper. In forming a cigarette, the segments 4, 5 and a further segment 4<SP>1</SP> of screening or absorbent material, as well as the tobacco 6, are successively injected, as by blowing, into the cigarette tube 2 after attachment thereto of a stiff paper mouthpiece 9 having a perforated cardboard disc 10. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the elements 4, 5, 6 only are blown into the tube 2 after insertion thereinto of a cardboard mouthpiece sleeve having an inwardly-directed flange at its inner end. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the elements 5, 6 only are blown into the tube 2 after insertion thereinto of a mouthpiece element 4 comprising wrapped crumpled paper and prepared as disclosed in Specification 768,381. Filter tips according to the invention can be cut from a continuous rod of alternate elements 4 and 5 provided, if desired, with discs 10. Reference is made to the inclusion in one or more segments of silica gel, aluminium hydroxide, or a reducing or oxidizing agent. Filter tips formed from cellulose acetate butyrate filaments are mentioned as known.
