Abstract

Expandable thermoplastic polymeric material is produced in finely-particled form by mechanically mixing a thermoplastic polymeric material and a readily volatile organic expanding agent; forcing the resultant mixture, at a temperature of at least 35 DEG C. but not more than 150 DEG C. above the softening temperature of the polymeric material, into a pressure chamber, the pressure in the chamber being at least equal to the pressure of the expanding agent at the temperature of the mixture; cooling the mixture in the pressure chamber to a temperature below the softening temperature of the polymeric material; comminuting the mixture; and discharging it from the pressure chamber in a finely-particled and substantially non-porous form. Specified thermoplastic polymeric materials are polystyrene, polymethacrylic acid esters and polyvinyl chloride. Exemplified expanding agents are butane, isobutylene, pentane, hexane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, acetane diethyl ether and carbon tetrachloride.ALSO:Expandable thermoplastic polymeric material is produced in finely particled form by mechanically mixing a thermoplastic polymeric material and a readily volatile organic expanding agent; forcing the resultant mixture, at a temperature of at least 35 DEG C but not more than 150 DEG C above the softening temperature of the polymeric material, into a pressure chamber, the pressure in the p chamber being at least equal to the pressure of the expanding agent at the temperature of the mixture; cooling the mixture in the pressure chamber to a temperature below the softening temperature of the polymeric material; comminuting the mixture; and discharging it from the pressure chamber in a finely particled and substantially non-porous form. Specified thermoplastic polymeric materials are polystyrene, polymethacrylic acid esters and polyvinyl chloride. Exemplified expanding agents are butane, isobutylene, pentane, hexane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, acetone, diethyl ether and carbon tetrachloride.
