A tunnel kiln for firing ceramics has a number of transverse circuits for the kiln atmosphere, each fan 6 having fire outlet ducts for recirculated atmosphere, the two outer ones on each side being common to adjacent circuits. The outlet ducts and return ducts 7 open into the kiln 1 at points opposite the spaces between stacks of ware 2. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the axis of symmetry of the inlet ducts is displaced from that of the outlet ducts.
