Abstract

907,975. Feeding magnetic tapes. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 12, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 34962/60. Class 40 (2). An air-cushion, established by the movement of the tape, prevents the tape 32 from contacting a magnetic head 30, obviating abrasive wear. The tape is led round a pair of guide rollers 38, 40 arranged to produce a lap of at least 15 degrees. Tape tension, provided by adjusting the vacuum pressure in vacuum columns (Fig. 1, not shown) is arranged to oppose the force of the air-cushion to maintain a head/tape spacing of 0.0001 inch. A dual head assembly, Fig. 4, has a bi-cylindrical guidesurface S such that the centre trough allows the air-cushion to be renewed ahead of the trailing head. Any tendency for the centre of a wide, multi-track tape to balloon out of operative contact with the inner members of stacked heads may be prevented by longitudinal grooves in the head faces.
