Abstract

1446945 Guiding record tapes; supporting magnetic heads INTERNATIONAL VIDEO CORP 21 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972 25 April 1973] 39621/73 Heading G5R [Also in Divisions B8 and G3] The head drum in a helical scan magnetic tape transport system has a revolving part 60 having helical grooves 76 of V-shaped cross-section so as to form an air bearing for the tape. The grooves have a short, substantially radial, leading face and a long trailing face preferably at 88 degrees to a radius. The drum carries two recording heads and an erase head (Fig. 7, not shown) and is readily removable from its driveshaft, electrical connections being by spring contacts 78. The complete drum includes a stationary part 62 having control and other track heads 66, electrical coupling between the two parts being by transformer (80, Fig. 6, not shown). The complete transport includes as bearing support guides, a capstan having grooves to avoid accidental air bearing (for friction drive), an idler wheel to eliminate flutter, and vacuum buffer columns.
