Abstract

1339091 Magnetic transducers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 11 July 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 32274/72 Heading G5R A head for use with a bidirectional magnetic tape drive has a contour 6 comprising two circular arcs, on which two transducing gaps 1, 2 for reading and writing, respectively, are disposed in positions which are offset relative to the arc centres 12, 13 in opposite directions and by different amounts 21, 22 measured parallel to the line joining the arc centres 12, 13, the read gap offset 21 being greater than the writegap offset 22. As shown, the arc radii R R and R W are equal, and gap 1 is for bidirectional reading, gap 2 for unidirectional writing. Preferably the read gap 1 is in the centre 14 of the tape-contact arc 7-8 and write gap 2 is displaced downstream of the centre 15 of the tapecontact arc 9-10. The tape transport, Fig. 2 (not shown), is preferably arranged so that the read tape-contact arc 7-8 is approximately twice the write tape-contact arc 9-10. The above head geometry is intended to equalize the tape-to-head separation at the read gap, and hence the read characteristics, for the two directions of tape transport.
