A grinding apparatus has one or more jets i for supplying fluid, additional to that at the contact between the wheel a and work c, so arranged that this fluid, impinging on or across the peripheral surface of the wheel and the internal surface of the housing b, will loosen waste deposits and thereby maintain the wheel surface clean and facilitate the removal of waste from the apparatus. There may be a. plurality of jets, with additional feed as at k, or in the case of a sheet of substantial width they may be disposed at one side of the hood b to project the liquid across the peripheral surface of the wheel, a pump, additional to e, may be located in the coolant tank f to boost the supply pressure. Control of the jet or jets is effected by a valve h.
