Abstract

<PICT:0907900/III/1> Fertiliser grade potassium meta phosphate is produced from wet process phosphoric acid and potassium chloride as described and claimed in Specification 832,011 in a rotary kiln comprising two co-axial horizontal drums 11, 12 one within the other. The ends of the inner drum 11 are closed by stationary end plates 13, 14 and a solution of KCl in phosphoric acid is fed to the drum 11 through a tube 21 passing through end plate 13 and end plate 15 sealing the outer drum 12. Material passes through holes in the end plate 14 and in the end wall of the inner drum 11 without allowing gases to flow between the drums, and a forked shoot 17 mounted on end plate 13 and lifters 19 in the outer drum 12 delivers material to the outlet 27 or to the inner drum 11 without allowing gases to pass. An outlet 22 passing through the fixed end plates 13, 15 allows uncontaminated HCl gas to be withdrawn from the inner drum, and a flue outlet 23 leads from the outer drum which is heated by a burner 24. The kiln may also be used to produce sodium sulphate from common salt and sulphuric acid. Fig 3 (not shown) illustrates a second embodiment employing a similar lifter and shoot to transfer material from the inner to the outer drum.
