Abstract

Dyes of formula <FORM:0907757/IV (b)/1> where R is an aryl or heterocyclic residue of a diazo component, R1 is an acyl group derived from an unsubstituted saturated fatty acid of at most 3 carbon atoms, one X is H and the other SO3H and n is 1 or 2, are described for use in photography (see Group XX). The dyes are made by conventional diazotisation and coupling processes. The NHR1 group is preferably in the m- or p-position to CO and acetic acid is the preferred fatty acid. Representative of indicated diazo or tetrazo components are aniline, anisidine aminobenzoic acid and its esters and amides, aniline sulphonic acid and amides thereof, aminodiphenyl ether and sulphone, aminohydroquinone dimethyl ether, naphthylamines and their sulphonic acids, dianisidine, diaminodiphenyl methane, terephthalic acid-bis-(4-aminoanilide), aminoazobenzenes and the dye metaaminobenzoic acid octyl ester --> 1-naphthylamine-6-sulphonic acid --> 2-methoxy-1-naphthylamine-6-sulphonic acid.
