Abstract

907,649. Measuring speed photo-electrically. COURTAULDS Ltd. March 30, 1961 [March 31, 1960], No. 11348/60. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (c)] Sudden speed changes are detected by apparatus comprising a body having equallyspaced features of identical length, a detector whose condition is changed while a feature passes it, and a device which compares the duration of the change with a standard time and produces a signal when said duration and standard time are in a predetermined relation. A filament 3, Fig. 1, is stretched to breaking point by a jaw 2 carrying a comb 4 intercepting light from a source 6 to a photo-cell 5. The square-wave output from cell 5 is differentiated and connected to two diodes D 1 , D 2 , Fig. 2. The positive pulses pass diode D 1 to switch multivibrator V 1 , V 2 into its unstable state whence it returns after a predetermined time. If the negative pulse arrives before multivibrator V 1 , V 2 has reset, indicating that jaw 2 has speeded up due to the breaking of filament 3, the negative pulse sets the bi-stable multivibrator V 3 , V 4 to energize a relay R. Specification 872,475 is referred to.
