An axle gear arrangement for swinging half-axles in a motor vehicle in which halfaxle 10 is rigidly connected through a flange 12 to the axle gear casing 11 and both halfaxles 10, 17 are articulated on the vehicle on a common pivot axis situated lower than the road wheel centres, is characterized in that a housing 22 rotatable about a transverse axis of the vehicle is mounted in casing 11 and serves both as a differential gear housing and as a housing for the universal joint 21 for axle shaft 34 which is associated with swinging half-axle 17 which is not rigidly connected to casing 11. Casing 11 fixedly carries at 14 and on an arm 15 a pivot pin 13, and a pin 13<SP>1</SP> in alignment with pin 13 is carried on the opposite side of the casing. Fork arms 16 of half-axle 17 are pivotable about pins 17, 17<SP>1</SP>, which also serve for the suspension of the axle gear on the vehicle frame through mountings 18, 19. Housing 22 is mounted within casing 11 by bearings 24, 26 and fixedly carries crown wheel 23 driven by a pinion 28 on the propeller shaft 27 and also carries differential bevel wheels 20. A forked drum 29 is rotatably mounted in housing 22 and has a journal 31 on which is keyed a differential driven wheel 32. The two prongs of drum 29 are separated by slots 33, in which slides a cylindrical member 35 connected to shaft 34 and forming part of universal joint 21. A nut 40 is screwed on to the end of housing 22 and has an internally projecting flange 40<SP>1</SP> which prevents axial movement in housing 22 of drum 29. A ring 39 is fastened on the right-hand end of drum 29 and has a step for maintaining the spacing apart of the prongs of the fork.
