Class 7(2) A vee engine has a crankcase 1, Fig. 1, with two rows of openings for cylinders, one row receiving vertical I.C. engine cylinders, the other row receiving cylinders or is blanked off, and reinforcing elements of closed hollow rectangular cross-section 2, 3, 4, 5 on both sides of each row of openings adjacent the cylinder mounting faces, at least one overhead valve in each vertical engine cylinder and the reinforcing element 2 being provided with push rod and lubricating oil ports. Vertical I.C. engine cylinders 6 and horizontal compressor cylinders 7 are cooled by water, from an external radiator (not shown), which is circulated by a pump mounted on a crankcase and cover and delivered by a duct in the cover to the duct 5. Drainage oil from the valve gear passes through push rod chambers 32 into duct 2 and through ports (not shown) into well 15. In another embodiment cylinders 28, 29, Fig. 3, are cooled by air from blower 33 in housing 34. In modifications the compressor cylinders are replaced by blank covers or covers having passages which interconnect the ducts 4 and 5, and a sheathing, in place of housing 34, directs all the cooling air towards the engine cylinders.
