Abstract

An adhesive comprises an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resin or a natural or a synthetic rubber and ungelatinized starch, the latter being present in such an amount that on heating a wet film of the adhesive above the gelatinization temperature of the starch, sufficient water is absorbed by the starch to accelerate formation of an adhesive bond and/or the drying of the adhesive. Specified synthetic resins are polymers and copolymers of styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl chloride, acrylates and mthacrylates; and specified synthetic rubbers are butadiene/styrene copolymers, butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers and neoprene. The starches exemplified are potato, tapioca and maize starches; modified and partially gelatinized starches also may be used. Optional additives are agents that lower the gelatinization temperature of the starch, e.g. urea, caustic soda, sodium acetate and zinc chloride; preservatives such as phenol and sodium phenate; and dibutyl phthalate or dibutoxy ethyl phthalate. The adhesives may be used in bonding materials, e.g. paper to aluminium foil.
