Abstract

906,306. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. HAYWARD TYLER & CO. Ltd. April 26, 1961 [Jan. 25, 1960], No. 2614/60. Class 35. The stator 14 of a canned electric motor driving a pump is hydraulically isolated from rotor 12 by sleeve 16 and discs 17, 18 and is cooled by passing fluid in a closed circuit through outlet 20 to heat exchanger 21 and back through inlet 22 to the stator cavity. The circulation may either be by convection alone or aided by external pump 23, and additional cooling surface in the stator is obtained by means of ducts 19. Rotor 12 which is supported in bearings 6, 7 by thrust bearing 11, is cooled by circulation of the pumped liquid by a subsidiary pump (not shown), via openings 25, 26 to another heat exchanger. For use in a vapour compression refrigeration system the stator cavity may be used to evaporate the working fluid which is then condensed in the heat exchanger, regulating valves being employed as required.
