Abstract

Vitamin-A acid panthenol ester is prepared by adding dropwise under nitrogen a benzene solution of vitamin-A acid chloride to a cooled (0 DEG C.) solution of d-panthenol in pyridine/benzene and raising the temperature to 50 DEG C. for 2 hours after 30 minutes. After ether extraction and drying the ester may be purified by chromatography on alumina. The mono glyceryl ester is prepared by a similar process whereby vitamin-A acid chloride is reacted with acetonyl-glycerine to give the vitamin-A acid acetonyl-glycerol ester which gives the mono-glyceryl ester on heating under nitrogen a solution thereof in an ether/acetone/acetic acid mixture.ALSO:Cosmetic compositions comprise a cosmetic or pharmaceutical base and Vitamin-A acid or an ester thereof, e.g. in a quantity of about 0.01 to 1% by weight. Suitable esters are those with monohydric alcohols and polyhydroxy alkanes containing up to 7 carbon atoms, e.g. sugars, glycerine and panthenol, the alcohol derived radical optionally being further substituted by araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic radicals which, in turn may bear carboxy, carbalkoxy, hydroxy and/or amino groups. Cosmetic forms mentioned are creams, pomades, salves, brilliantines and hair lotions. Optional ingredients include substances conventionally used for the care of the skin, e.g. lanolin and lecithin.
