Abstract

905,293. Hose reels. BROCKHOUSE & CO. Ltd., J. April 17, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960]. No. 1480/60. Class 99(2). A reel for a permanently connected hose comprises a horizontal non-rotatable tubular spindle on which the reel is rotatably mounted, the spindle being adapted at the entry end to be coupled to a fixed fluid-supply line and to be coupled at the exit end by means of a fluidtight running joint 10 to a hose coupling 16 which is rotatable with the reel and is adapted to be coupled to the end of a hose which may be wound on the reel, and the spindle being fixed at its entry end on a pillar 25 which is supported by a pedestal 22, whereby the reel can be turned about the axis of the pillar while maintaining the connection with the fluid-supply line. As shown, the reel which comprises a cylindrical barrel 1 supported by central portions 7, 8 of end flanges 2, 3 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 6 by means of ball bearings 4, 5. The entry end 17 of the spindle 6 extends completely through opposed vertical side walls of a short horizontal boxlike bracket 18 and is welded thereto. At its extreme end 19 the spindle is upturned and is adapted to have a short length of flexible hose coupled to it to connect it to the fluid supply. The pillar 25 is mounted in bearings 23, 24 in the pedestal 22 and an external flange 28 on the pillar bears on a thrust bearing 27 supported by a flange 26 on the pedestal. A plate in two parts 60a, 60b bolted to the flange 26 holds the pillar in position. The upper end of the pillar extends through opposite horizontal walls of a part 29 of the bracket 18 and is welded thereto. The parts 29, 18 are welded end-to-end with their axes set at about 45 degrees. A radial arm 64 fixed to a sleeve 30 thereby movable with the pillar 25 carries a spring loaded plunger which is raised by a lever 32 and is adapted to clamp the reel. by entering one of the holes 31 in the part 60a. A sprocket 39 driven by a motor 33 via a reduction gear box 34 and a chain drive 42 is fastened to the sun wheel 40 of an epicyclic gear. The sprocket 39 and sun wheel 40 are mounted for rotation independently of the reel on a bearing 41. A planet wheel 46 is fastened to a shaft 43 mounted in bearings 41, 45. Means such as a ratchet and pawl are provided for locking the shaft 43 against rotation in one direction and for permitting it to rotate in the opposite direction. This arrangement allows the motor 33 to drive the reel for re-winding the hose. Re-winding by hand may also be effected by engaging a handle in slot 47 in the shaft 43. In modifications, the fluid may be supplied through a tubular pedestal and a tubular pillar having a fluid-tight running joint at its lower end within the pedestal and the bracket 18 may be inclined upwardly to the spindle. Also the spindle and pillar may be a single member bent to the appropriate shape.
