Abstract

A catalyst for the gasification of hydrocarbon oils with steam is formed by firing a shape moulded from a mix comprising lime or a substance which decomposes on heating to give lime, impure magnesia which contains silica, one or more oxides of boron, phosphorus, vanadium, chromium or manganese. A preferred catalyst contains 0,25 - 2% boron trioxide, and has a free lime content of 0,5 - 2%. Additionally 3 - 10% nickel oxide may be included. After firing the shape may be ground, remoulded and fired again. Examples are given.
