Abstract

In viscose spinning, there is added to the viscose, and/or to the coagulating bath, an ethylene oxide addition product of a compound having at least 8 carbon atoms which contains an amide, sulphonamide or a primary or secondary amino group and in which the terminal hydroxyl group of the polyethylene oxide chain is substituted by an alkylamino residue having 2-3 carbon atoms. The compound may contain an aliphatic, aliphatic-cycloaliphatic, or aliphatic-aromatic hydrocarbon residue with 8-20 carbon atoms and a polyethylene oxide chain with 5-40 mols. ethylene oxide. Specified compounds are as follows:- <FORM:0905149/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0905149/IV(a)/2> <FORM:0905149/IV(a)/3> <FORM:0905149/IV(a)/4> <FORM:0905149/IV(a)/5> <FORM:0905149/IV(a)/6> These compounds are derived from high-molecular amines and acid amides which contain aliphatic, aliphatic-cycloaliphatic, or aliphatic-aromatic hydrocarbon residues, indicated by R, having 8-20 carbon atoms, and contain polyethylene oxide residues having 5-40 mols. ethylene oxide per molecule, the alkyl amino groups having 2-3 carbon atoms. Such compounds may be made by treating the ethylene oxide addition products with acrylonitrile followed by hydrogenation, or by treatment of the ethylene oxide addition products with ethylene imine, e.g. the hydrogenated reaction product of acrylonitrile with the addition product of 9 mols. ethylene oxide to 1 mol. dodecylamine, the hydrogenated reaction product of 1 or 2 mols. acrylonitrile with an alkylamine mixture having 8-18 carbon atoms made on the basis of coconut oil and reacted with 8 mols. ethylene oxide, the reaction product of ethylene imine with the addition product of 12 mols. ethylene oxide to 1 mol. oleic acid-N-methylamide, the mono-g -amino propyl ether of the addition product of 12 mols. ethylene oxide to either (a) 1 mol. fatty acid mono-ethanolamide (fatty acid residue C12-C18), or (b) 1 mol. of an alkylamine mixture (C6-C18 alkyl residues), or the bis-g -amino-propyl ether of the addition product of 12 mols. ethylene oxide to 1 mol. of an alkylamine mixture (C8-C18 alkyl residues). In the examples these compounds are added to the viscose before ripening. From 0,01-0,5% by weight of the compound calculated on the viscose, or on the coagulating bath, as appropriate, may be added, and the viscose may be spun into an acid coagulating bath which contains at least 35 g/l. ZnSO4, preferably 35-105 g/l. ZnSO4, and 60-100 g/l. H2SO4. Desirably, the bath contains 95 g/l. ZnSO4 and 75 g/l. H2SO4. The filaments may be stretched in a second, weak acid bath. Filaments so made have a round or bean-shaped structure with a full or thick shell, and a smooth periphery, and show higher strengths and lower swelling values compared with conventional filaments. The filaments are suitable for use in tyre cord.
