Abstract

Regenerated cellulose threads are made by spinning a viscose containing 0.08-0.4% by weight of a water-soluble condensation product of the formula CnH2n+1O(CH2CH2O)mH o CnH2n+1COO(CH2CH2O)mH, in which n is an integer from 10 to 18 and m is an integer, e.g. from 16 to 20, into an aqueous coagulating and regenerating bath which is at an elevated temperature and contains, per litre, 41-68 grams of sulphuric and 186-250 grams, preferably 210 grams, of sodium sulphate and more than 37 grams of zinc sulphate, and highly stretching the resultant threads in a second bath which is hot and contains, per litre, 2-32 grams of sulphuric acid. The first bath may also contain ferrous sulphate, the zinc sulphate content of the bath in this case still being more than 37 grams per litre of bath. The viscose should generally contain 6.5-8.5% of cellulose, and preferably about 5-6% of sodium hydroxide and 32-45% of carbon bisulphide, based on the cellulose in the viscose. The ball fall viscosity of the viscose is preferably 25-100 seconds at 20 DEG C. and its gamma value is preferably 40-50. The spinning bath preferably contains 44-75 grams of zinc sulphate per litre. The temperature of the first bath is preferably 40-70 DEG C. and of the second bath 90-98 DEG C. The length of the path of travel of the thread in the first bath is preferably 20-200 cm. and in the second bath 40-200 cm., and the degree of stretch in the second bath is preferably 50-120%. The rate of withdrawal of the thread from the spinning nozzle is preferably 15-50 metres per minute. The second bath preferably contains acid and salts in about one tenth to one fifth of the concentration of the acid and salts in the first bath. The threads have higher basic yarn strengths and higher cord strengths than threads obtained from viscose without additives. In an example, viscose containing 0.15% of an ethenoxylated oleyl alcohol having 11-20 ethylene oxide groups per molecule is spun into a bath at 60 DEG C. containing, per litre, 54 grams of sulphuric acid, 210 grams of sodium sulphate and 50 grams of zinc sulphate. In a second bath at 90 DEG C., of about one tenth to one fifth of the concentration of the first bath, the thread produced in the first bath is stretched by 100%. Specification 541,099 is referred to.
