Classes 7(2) and 7(6) In a two stroke diesel engine, having an exhaust driven turbo blower 19, exhaust valve 12 is opened before scavenging begins by an axiallyslidable cam 17 provided with two or three tracks I-III for at least one direction of engine rotation, changeover of tracks being effected at predetermined points in the range of speed or torque or scavenging pressure. At low speeds of forward engine rotation, roller 16 is on cam track I and at a higher speed governor 41 moves slide valve 35<SP>1</SP> to the right to direct a hydraulic or pneumatic pressure medium to servomotor 31. Bell-crank 28 slides camshaft 22 to move track II, which has a smaller pre-exhaust angle, under roller 16. Further cam tracks may be provided. In modifications, transitional surfaces between cam tracks may be omitted and a roller-lifting device (not described) provided. In further modifications a displacer servomotor is disposed on the camshaft and the speed governor is replaced by a speed-responsive hydraulic or pneumatic system or a pressure-sensitive element connected to the scavenging air system.
