Abstract

A sanitary napkin incorporates an internal layer which is capable of precipitating proteins from fluids absorbed by the napkin. Preferably the control layer is creped wadding impregnated with ferric ammonium sulphate but other suitable salts are ferric sulphate, aluminium zinc sulphate, aluminium potassium sulphate, aluminium sodium sulphate, aluminium ammonium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, ammonium sulphate, aluminium acetate, zinc acetate, zinc ammonium sulphate, and zinc carbonate. Such a layer causes precipitation of haemoglobin and other proteins from menstrual fluid and any fluid which escapes to the outer surface of the pad is relatively colourless.
