Abstract

904,846. Temperature Indicators. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 14, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960; Oct. 15, 1960], Nos. 2188/60 and 35426/60. Class 97 (3). A temperature-indicating device comprises a closed transparent P.V.C. tube 15 divided into compartments by a separator 12 which melts when the temperature of the device rises to a given value, thus allowing the liquids 11, 14 to mix and produce a substantially permanent coloration, dissimilar from any coloration when the liquids are separated, the separator being insoluble in and non- reactive with the liquids which it separates. Preferably a flocculent precipitate is formed when the two liquids mix so as to prevent leaks through the separator as well as to be clearly visible. The P.V.C. tube 15 has a glass lining 10 with which the separator makes good contact. A ball-bearing or glass bead 13 is included in the separator 12 to ensure mixing of the liquids 11, 14 when the separator melts. A comparison spot of the same colour as the liquids after mixing is provided at 17. If several temperatures are to be indicated several different separators arranged in order of their melting-points are used with one liquid in the first compartment and the other liquid in the other compartments, the extent of the colouring then indicating how high the temperature has risen. Ethyl alcohol and/or ethylene glycol may be added to the liquids as an " antifreeze " if the temperatures to be indicated are below or near ice point. Various examples of combinations of liquids and the resulting colour and possible separators with their melting-points are given.
