904,386. Finishing fabrics. PASOLDS Ltd. March 2, 1961 [March 10, 1960], No. 8447/60. Class 42 (1). Apparatus for stretching fabric comprises two or more elements 1, 2 having ribs or other projections between which elements the fabric passes to be engaged and stretched thereby, the ribs or projections 3 being laterally spaced from one another and being disposed parallel to the direction in which the fabric is passed, the fabric being caused to pass between the spaces separating adjacent projections. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, metallic discs 3 are mounted on driven rollers 1, 2 which are adjustably mounted in a slide (not shown) so that the spacing of the horizontal roller axes and hence the degree of stretch imparted to the fabric may be varied. A freely rotatable feed roller 5 is provided. Tubular knitted fabric is preferably stretched after washing, the dampness of the fabric increasing the frictional resistance between the rollers and the fabric. In a modification, Fig. 3, the fabric passes between a driven, ribbed roller 9 and a ribbed reciprocating member 10. As the fabric passes over the roller 9 the member 10 moves downwardly and rearwardly, the rearward movement preventing the member 10 from moving relatively to the fabric whilst in contact therewith. A crank-wheel 16 drives the member 10 through the linkage shown. The rocking movement may be adjusted by moving the position of the crank-wheel 16 to vary the depth of engagement between the member 10 and the roller 9. In a modification, not shown, freely rotatable discs are mounted between the discs 3 on each roller and are spring- biased to nip the fabric between them and the discs on the other roller. In a further modification, the discs 3 are provided with radial needles to penetrate the fabric. In another modification, the fabric is stretched by passing it between two reciprocable comb-like elements.
