Abstract

1,061,189. Cutting tubular fabrics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 1, 1965 [Nov. 29, 1963], No. 47219/63. Heading B5A. [Also in Division D1] A device for cutting a tubular fabric 13 made of or containing yarns of a thermoplastic material comprises means 10 for stretching the fabric 13, a cutting wheel 16 having a peripheral cutting edge arranged to contact one surface of the fabric 13, a pressure element 18 arranged so as to contact another surface of the fabric 13 at a region thereon opposite or nearly opposite to the region of contact between the wheel 16 and the surface which it contacts, and means for heating the element 18 to bring the fabric at the location where it is to be cut to a plastic condition. As shown, a tubular fabric 13 passes over a metal calender frame 10 consisting of two pairs of parallel arms 11, 12 and provided with raised entry arms 15. The hardened steel wheel 16 slits the fabric 13 longitudinally and is mounted so as to be freely rotatable horizontally in a recess 17 in one of the arms 11. The element 18 consists of an electrically heated metal bit 19 partially enclosed within a ceramic housing 20 adjustably mounted on a flat plate seated on a base adapted to move in slots in a horizontal bar extending across and beneath the frame 10. A rough adjustment of the heated means may be made by movement of the element 18 along the horizontal bar and a fine adjustment may be made by movement of the housing 20 on the base, this movement being imparted by rotation of a screw-threaded rod secured to the housing 20. Fabrics cut by this method may comprise yarns of synthetic linear polyamide or polyester condensation products, organic derivatives of cellulose, e.g. cellulose esters such as cellulose propionate, cellulose butyrate, cellulose aceto-propionate or cellulose ethers such as ethyl cellulose or benzyl cellulose, polyvinyl esters, polyvinyl alcohol, copolymers of vinyl halide and vinyl esters, polymerized vinylidene chloride or polymerized acrylic acid or acrylic acid derivatives such as polymerized methyl methacrylate. Non-thermoplastic yarns, e.g. cotton, silk, wool, linen or regenerated cellulose, may be included in the fabric and mixed yarns containing both thermoplastic and non-thermoplastic fibres may be used.
