Abstract
903,996. Cable joints. GLOVER & CO. Ltd., W. T. March 2, 1961 [March 3, 1960 (2)], Nos. 7564/60 and 7565/60. Class 38 (1). In the jointing of paper insulated electric power cables, the method used comprises slipping two stress cones 9 over the cut-back stepped dielectric 4 of the two single core cable lengths, jointing the inner conductors 7 by means of a ferrule 8, applying a layer of polythene tape over the whole of parts 4, 7 and 8 to form a gas-tight sealing layer 10, coating steps 3 of the dielectric 4 with viscous epoxy resin and pushing the correspondingly stepped stress cones 9 into position thereon such that some resin is extruded along the dielectric 4. A tubular mould 11, with apertures 12 and 13 uppermost, is then applied over the joint with the stress cones closing its ends and supporting it, the mould is filled with liquid, cold-setting epoxy resin 16 via aperture 12, and finally the whole joint is covered by a lapping of metal screening tape 17 which connects the cut-back screens 5 of the cables. When jointing concentric cables, a copper tube is used as the mould and is directly connected to the outer concentric conductors of each cable core (Fig. 2, not shown), the outer conductor wires being left long enough to be wrapped around the stress cones and moulded and attached thereto by a wire binding. Paper tape insulation is then applied over both the joint and the exposed ends of the outer cable dielectric, and a metal screening tape is again wound over all. Both of the above joints may be enclosed in a casing filled with insulating compound.
