Abstract
706,231. Buoyant cables ; sleeve couplings. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP HOLLANDSCHE DRAAD-EN KABELFABRIEK. Jan. 29, 1952 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 2421/52. Classes 36 and 38 (1) A buoyant cable comprises an insulated metallic conductor 4 loosely surrounded by a tube 1 of polythene or other light, flexible material, around which is applied a layer 2 of multi cellular elastic material and a wearresistant envelope 3. The layer 2 is preferably of cellular polyvinyl chloride, and the envelope 3 a winding or braiding of polyvinylidene chloride. The conductor 4 consists of copper strands 5, which may have a steel core, and an insulating layer 7. The cable is made in sections, with the tube 1 open at each end of each section, so that during operation it becomes filled with water, which dissipates the heat developed in the conductor. Couplings.-To join two lengths of cable, the ends of the various layers are stripped back and envelopes 3 secured to tubes 1 by cords 8. The exposed parts of tube 1 have perforations 10, and are closed at the ends by caps 9 through which the insulated conductors 4 pass. The bared ends of the conductors are held in conical bores in metal members 11 by means of cones 12. The members 11 are held in a metal connecting cylinder by screw caps 14. The joint is finally enclosed in insulation 15.
