Abstract
903,991. Stacking sheets. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. Dec. 19, 1958 [Feb. 3, 1958; July 17, 1958], Nos. 3437/58 and 22964/58. Class 100(1). Sheet-stacking apparatus includes a hopper for holding a stack 1 of sheets, a pair of generally cylindrical rollers 3 spaced apart with their axes parallel and lying in a plane parallel to the plane of the sheets in the stack, a recess 6 extending longitudinally along the surface of each roller, and means for rotating the rollers in synchronism, the rollers being so arranged that at one point in their rotation the recesses 6 are positioned to receive and support opposite edges of a sheet or sheets fed towards the rollers in a plane parallel to the plane of the sheets in the stack 1 to form thereby a sub-stack 7 spaced from one face of the stack, and that further rotation of the rollers moves the substack into the hopper. The hopper is formed by side plates 2 and extensions 5 of the side plates extend into circumferential grooves in the rollers 3 to prevent the lowermost card from slipping sideways out of the stack. When the rollers are in the position shown, one or more cards are fed thereto so that marginal portions of the cards engage in the recesses 6 in the rollers. The rollers are then rotated through 180 degrees in the direction of the arrows 8 so as to transfer the card or cards in the recesses 6 to the bottom of the stack 1 and bring further recesses 6a into position to receive a further card or cards. This embodiment may be used for stacking horizontally as well as vertically if a suitable support, e.g. a spring-pressed plate, is provided for the main stack. The rollers 3 may have the noses 9 above the recesses 6, 6a omitted in which case the stack 1 is supported in the hopper by spring steel fingers projecting inwards from the side plates 2. In another embodiment described in the second Provisional Specification, but not in the Complete Specification, the sub-stack is built up on a platform situated below the bottom of the stack. When the sub-stack is complete a number of fingers pass through gaps in the platform to engage the bottom of the sub-stack and move it upwards until the top of the sub-stack is supporting the main stack of cards in the hopper the fingers move the bottom card of the sub-stack beyond spring or camcontrolled latches on the hopper wall and then are moved downwards before raising a further sub-stack.
