Webs 5 slit from a wide web are wound on cores 26 mounted in inclined guides 29, the cores being rotated by a belt or belts 22. The cores 26, Fig. 2, each comprise a centre-piece 52 freely rotatable by ball-bearings 53 on a spindle 55 guided by ball races between the guides 29. The spindle 55 carries pinions 34 engaging racks 33. When the roll 28, Fig. 1b being wound has left sufficient space at the bottom of the guides 29 an empty previously-pasted core 26 is inserted in the guides. The core is spaced from the belts 22 by a notched hub 38 engaging a disc 42, Fig. 2, on the spindle 55. The hub 38 is actuated by an electromagnet 40, Fig. 1b to rotate the notch into engagement with the disc 42 to permit lowering of the core 26. When the roll reaches the required diameter a contact 36 closes to energize a relay 44 in a control circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), which causes energization of a solenoid 19, Fig. 1b which releases a latch 17 engaging a lever 12. The lever 12 carries a knife 11 which co-operates with a knife 10 when a roller 14 engages a depression 15a of a cam 15, thereby cutting the webs 5. The cut end then adheres to the empty previously pasted core 26 which is lowered into engagement with the belts 22 upon energization of the electromagnet 40.
