Abstract

903,800. Filters. PAUSER, O. Dec. 22, 1960 [Dec. 24, 1959], No. 44041/60. Class 46. Swimming-pool water to be filtered, introduced at 30, is pumped (31) tangentially at 32 into the region 12a beneath a perforate screen 12 where coarse solids settle, e.g. in a central sump 27, at 40. The water passes upwards through screen 12 and through a mass 39 of shredded foamed synthetic plastic which either floats in the water or is forced by the upwards flow against a second perforate screen 13. Filtrate is discharged at 36. For backflushing, a lever 38 is operated to close valves 33 and 37 and open valves 34 and 29, whereupon raw water pumped in at 35a flows downwards and out at 28, 29. The material 39 may be agitated by stirrers 18, 19, motivated either by a paddle wheel 20, 21 loosely mounted on their shaft 14 and rotating it through gears 22 to 25, or by a crank 26. At the same time a brush 16 mounted on a shaft 14 sweeps the undersurface of screen 12. When stirring is stopped, the downward flow forces the material 39 against the lower screen. The backflow stream may be stopped and restarted. The solids 40 are discharged with backwashed residue. Preferably valve 29 is operable independently of the other valves to to waste incoming water which is too dirty to merit filtration. The material 39 may be used in a mobile filter associated with mobile equipment for cleaning the walls and bottom of a swimming bath, and it may be contained in a net-like bag.
