Abstract

903,165. Photo-electric polarimeters. ZEISSSTIFTUNG, CARL, [trading as ZEISS, C. [Firm of]]. March 20, 1961 [March 24, 1960], No. 10004/61. Addition to 802,584. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XX] The polarimeter of the parent Specification is modified in that the compensation Faraday cell contains a substance or substances having a Verdet constant, the dispersion of which conforms to the dispersion of the specific rotation of the substance under test. This permits the use of a polychromatic light source. The Faraday cell comprises a coil 15 surrounding a polarimeter tube 16 containing carbon disulphide 20. For use with different test substances a quartz glass block 19 is pushed in or out to vary the relative length of glass and liquid to change the Verdet constant dispersion. In an alternative cell, chambers 24, 25, 26, Fig. 3, containing different magneto-optically active liquids may be brought into the light path on the axis of coil 21 for different test substances. For testing glucose and sucrose, water and 77.73% by volume acetone in water respectively may be used.
