Abstract

1-Glutamic acid is prepared by adding one of a given set of micro-organisms (see below) in spore form to a nutrient medium containing as principal components a crude saccharide as carbon source and a nitrogen compound in excess of the nitrogen growth requirement of the micro-organism as nitrogen source, cultivating the micro-organism aerobically and recovering 1-glutamic acid from the medium. The micro-organism to be used is one of a set of five whose bacteriological properties are listed and which are classified as Bacillus megatherium or Bacillus circulans. Various carbon and nitrogen sources are specified. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 826,097.
