Abstract

Caprolactam is polymerized under alkaline and anhydrous conditions in the presence of a polymerization accelerator having the general formula <FORM:0902577/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, aralkenyl or alkynyl, R1 is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, aralkenyl or alkynyl or R and R1 form part of a single hydrocarbon chain and Me is a metal cation, e.g. sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium. In the examples, 6-caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of:-(1) sodium in a carbon dioxide atmosphere; (2) sodium-6-caprolactam-N-carboxylate and (3) sodium and sodium-6-caprolactam-N-carboxylate. Specification 538,619, U.S.A. Specifications 2,622,076 and 2,647,105 and Czechoslavakia Specification 87,163 are referred to.
