[Also in Groups I and XXIV] Apparatus for extracting moisture from materials comprises a motor-rotated pressing drum 1 in which is at least one pressure plate 5 driven by the drum and sliding axially therein with the aid of a threaded spindle 6 to which the plate 5 is fixed and which extends outside the drum and is held by bearing supports in a nut 13 constructed as a bush rotatable in the bearing and having means 28 to secure it against axial movement in the bearing and means 22 to rotate it. The drum 1 is formed by spaced wooden staves 2 held in iron hoops 3 reinforced by bars 16. The drum has a solid end plate 4 and a conical spoke-ring 7 mounted respectively for rotation in bearings on end supports 9 and 10. Longitudinal anti-twist ribs inside the drum engage in slots around the periphery of the plate 5 (Figs. 2 and 4, not shown). A lid (Fig. 2, not shown) is provided on the cylindrical sidewall of the drum for filling it. Chains 19 or plastic ropes which connect the pressure plate 5 to the end plate 4 break up the pressed cake for emptying or repressing. A receiving trough 17 runs on rollers 18 and the whole press may be made mobile by having rollers on the feet of the supports 9 and 10. The drum 1 and nut 13 are rotated by gear-wheels 24 and 22 respectively which are driven by the motor through suitable gearing. Alternatively, the nut may be rotated by hand or by an independent motor or held stationary, so that the speed of axial movement on the plate 5 in the drum may be varied as required (see also Group XXIV).
