Abstract

902,273. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. July 8, 1960 [July 18, 1959], No. 23880/60. Class 100 (4). A printer with a type cylinder 18 rotatable about and slidable along its axis is secured in a type basket 14, 16 mounted on a shaft 1 which is supported both in a block 2 and a rod 4 for vertical and rotative movement by ropes, such as 40, for type selection. The block 2 and the rod 4 are joined by tie plates 6, 8 pivotally mounted on pins 10, 12 and an extension of the plate 8 has a slot 24 for a guide linkage 20-22 which urged by a spring 26 engages under the plate 16 to urge the type basket upwards. A drive shaft 38 acting through a crank 34 and coupling 30, 32 constantly swings the plates 6, 8 about the pins 10, 12 to effect impression on the platen 52 of the selected type which is aligned during this movement vertically and rotatively by engagement of guide slots of plates 56 by toothed-shaped projections on the plate 14, and by a pin 62 engaging a star wheel 60, respectively. To suppress printing a suitable blank space or recess on the type cylinder 18 is positioned opposite the platen. The coupling 30, 32 is split and resilient and can be adjusted to alter the impression force by varying the overthrow 54 and the effective force of a coupling spring.
