Abstract
902,168. Planing wood. HORSTMANN & SHERWEN Ltd. Oct. 17, 1960 [Nov. 4, 1959], No. 37458/59. Class 145. A planing and thicknessing attachment adapted for mounting on a wood-working machine comprises a planing table having separate relatively vertically-adjustable parts 11, 12 for supporting a workpiece 13 up to and beyond an underlying rotary cutter tool 2, a vertically-adjustable thicknesser table 35 which has a downwardly-directed work-locating surface and can be swung from an operative position above the planing table to an inoperative position clear of the table, and retractable worksupports 24 arranged to project above the part 11 of the table to hold a planed surface of the workpiece against the thicknesser table while the opposite face is fed over the tool. The attachment is intended to replace the work-table of the machine and is bolted to the cutter support 1. The parts 11, 12 of the planing table are mounted on pairs of parallel links 14, 15 pivotally mounted on shafts 17, 18 on the parts and a casing 10. One, 14, of each pair of links is extended to form an arm 20 engaged by a screw-threaded spindle 21 which is rotatable by a head 23 to vertically adjust the respective part. The part 11 is formed with slots 25 through which extend the work-supports consisting of flaps 24 which are pivotally mounted on the shafts 17 and are provided with extensions 28 having bosses 29 screw-threaded to receive a spring 30 connected to a lever 32 at one end pivoted to a bolt 33 and at the other end movable to opposite ends of a slot 34 in the casing to retract or extend the flaps. The thick @esser table 35 is rotatable mounted on a sleeve keyed to a post 36 which is vertically adjustable and can be held in position by a wedge on a rod 37 having a head 39. The sleeve is formed at its upper end with an opensided cage 46, 47 around a nut 45 which is screwthreaded on the post to provide a fine vertical adjustment for the table. The table has a boss 40 having a slot which is engaged by the lower. side 46 of the cage. When the table is pressed downwardly against a spring 44, the side 46 is disengaged from the slot to permit the table to swing 180 degrees from its operative position about the planing table to an inoperative position clear of the table. In operation, one side of a workpiece is passed over the cutter with the flaps 24 retracted and the table 35 in its inoperative position. The table 35 is then moved to its operative position and the flaps extended to press the previously-planed surface against the table 35 while the second surface is passed over the cutter. In an alternative embodiment, each flap is provided with its own spring and is retainable in its retracted position by a button-operated catch.
