Abstract

1,044,483. Copy-milling. K. REICH. Feb. 18, 1964 [March 8, 1963; July 17, 1963], No. 6687/64. Heading B3K. [Also in Division B5] A machine for planing or milling off parts of layers 2, Fig. 5, of veneer or plastic which are secured to, and project beyond the edges of, boards or plates 1 comprises two rotatable tools 3, 4 located one above the other on shafts 45, 46 which have horizontal axes and are rotatably mounted in swing arms 7, 8, Fig. 2, feeler elements 27, 28 carried by the arms for controlling the distance apart of the tools by engagement with the workpiece, and bifurcated members 11, 12 which resiliently mount the arms, the lower member being rigidly secured to the frame 50 of the machine and the upper member being pivotable about the axis 47 of the upper arm and adapted to be locked in position on the frame. Each swing arm 7, 8 is mounted on an axis 47, 48 and is formed with a cup-shaped member 16, Fig. 3, which houses a plurality of cup springs 17 at one end abutting the bottom 16<SP>1</SP> of the member 16, and at the other end engaging a cap 18 which is adjustable by a bolt 64 in one arm of the bifurcated member to vary the action of the springs on the arm 7, 8 which thereby resiliently abuts the other arm. The upper bifurcated member 11 has an extension 11<SP>1</SP> formed with a slot 11<SP>11</SP> engaged by a hand screw 15 whereby the initial position, as determined by the bottom of the cup-shaped member 16 engaging the lower arm of the member 11, of the upper tool 3 can be adjusted. A bracket 26, Fig. 5, extends from each arm 7, 8 and carries a further arm 29 which carries the feeler element 27 or 28 and is vertically adjustable on the bracket to compensate for wear or re-grinding of the tools by an eccentric device on the bolt 63 securing the arm to the bracket. The upper arm 29 carries an inverted T member 35, Fig. 1, having a horizontal part which forms or carries gliding elements for contacting the upper surface of the workpieee or, as shown, has pivots for a pair of discs 27, 27<SP>1</SP> constituting the upper feeling element, the upstanding arm of the member being connected by a parallel linkage 38, 39 to a bracket 61 on the machine frame so that as the arm 7 carrying the upper tool 3 swings about its axis 47, the lower contact points of the discs 27, 27<SP>1</SP> remain in a line parallel to the table 49 of the machine. The lower element may consist of a similar arrangement or a single disc 28 carried by the lower arm 29. The shafts 45, 46, Fig. 2, carrying the tools 3, 4 are driven by a belt 23 from a motor 22 mounted on a pivot 24, the weight of the motor being compensated by a spring 25. In another embodiment, the discs 27, 27<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8, are mounted in horizontal alignment on a member 52 which is guided for vertical movement on a rod 53 and has a pin-and-slot connection 54, 55 with the arm 29. In a further embodiment in which, in addition to having tools 103, 104, Fig. 11, and feeler elements 127, 128 for removing the vertically extending portions of veneers 102 secured to workpieces 101, side cutters 200, 201 are provided for trimming the horizontally extending portions 205<SP>1</SP>, 206<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 12 of veneers 205, 206 secured to the surfaces of the workpieces 101. The side cutters are mounted on the shafts 145, 146 carrying the cutters 103, 104 and are vertically positioned by gliding elements 202, 207 which have convex surfaces for contacting the upper and lower surfaces of the veneers 205, 206 and are mounted on spacers 216 extending from plates 208, 209 secured to the arms 107, 108. During trimming of the portions 205<SP>1</SP>, 206<SP>1</SP>, the workpiece is abutted against an adjustable stop 210 extending from the frame 150 of the machine.
