Abstract

<PICT:0901923/III/1> <PICT:0901923/III/2> A casing 1 has a gas-tight tap 2, a gas-tight floor 3, inlet and outlet connexions 4, 5 respectively, at least two containers, e.g. 6a, 6b, 6c having louvred opposite faces extending between the top and floor of the casing, each louvre sloping downwardly and inwardly of the containers, at least one chamber, e.g. 12a, 12b, 12c of known capacity beneath each container, means for intermittently introducing fresh or regenerated solid free-flowing treatment material into the top of each container, e.g. charging tubes 8a, 8b, 8c, provided with valves 9a, 9b, 9c respectively, means for intermittently discharging spent or partially spent solid material from the bottom of each container, e.g. swing, gate valves 10a, 10b, 10c and chambers 12a, 12b, 12c having discharge means, e.g. valves 14a, 14b, 14c. Preferably the louvres extend from the top to the floor of the casing. The containers may be in spaced parallel relationship or in concentric relationship. The containers may be fitted with plates which divide than into individual compartments longitudinally each compartment having separate means for introduction of and dispersal of treatment material and a chamber of known capacity therebeneath. The chamber beneath may be a transportable vessel 16 provided with trunnions 18 carrying hooked bindle 17 and having a tubular opening attached to stop valve 15. Its capacity is preferably larger than any of the chambers 12a, 12b or 12c. Treatment material, e.g. Ni3S2, MoS2 or copper thiomolybdate having been discharged into vessel 16, the latter may be hoisted by means (not shown) to a position above a charging tube, e.g. 8a, 8b, 8c for recharging a container adjacent to the one from which the material was discharged. In a modification (not shown) the containers may be of regular polygonal crosssection in concentric arrangement. The treatment material may be regenerated, e.g. by oxidation.
