Abstract

901,850. Dispensing measured quantities of liquid. GASKELL & CHAMBERS Ltd. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 26, 1960], No. 2758/60. Class 106 (5). A dispenser of the free-piston type, particularly for dispensing beer, has a pair of rotary plug valves 16, 17 and the piston 15 slides on a tube 18 through which incoming liquid is supplied to both valves and which also interconnects the valves for simultaneous rotation by a handle 19. In the position shown, incoming liquid flows through a radial port 20 in the lower valve 17 and an L-shaped conduit 22 in the lower end member 12 into the cylinder 10 and the liquid displaced above the piston flows through an L-shaped conduit 22 in the upper end member 11 and a chordal slot 21 in the upper valve 16 to a discharge line 25. When the valves are rotated, incoming liquid flows up the tube 18 and through the radial port 20 of the upper valve 16 and the L-shaped conduit 22 of the upper end member 11 into the top end of the cylinder and the liquid displaced below the cylinder flows into the lower conduit 22 and slot 21 to a transfer tube 26 connected to the discharge line 25. The discharge line may have a spring-loaded closure member to prevent dripping. The cylinder wall is transparent and may have a datum line at each end co-operating with a line on the piston to indicate to a customer that correct measure has been given. The liquid may be pressurized by carbon dioxide or other gas or by a pump or by both such means and, where a pump is used, a pressure sensitive switch may switch off the pump motor at a predetermined pressure.
